Protein Oatmeal (No protein powder!)

by radoo_ngnh2u

Protein oatmeal is a quick, warm, and filling breakfast that’s perfect for busy mornings. This isn’t your traditional protein oatmeal with protein powder, though. You might think my secret ingredient for this oatmeal sounds a bit strange at first but I promise, give it a chance and you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Ingredients needed for protein oatmeal

  • 1 cup oatmeal
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 2 egg yolks (no whites)
  • Pinch of salt
  • Cinnamon
  • Pure maple syrup
  • Vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp butter (optional)

How to make protein oatmeal

  1. Bring milk and salt to a boil
  2. Stir in oatmeal and reduce to a simmer
  3. Simmer with lid on for a few minutes
  4. Stir frequently and let the oatmeal soak up most of the milk
  5. Once oatmeal is cooked and liquid is absorbed, stir in cinnamon, maple syrup, vanilla extract and butter
  6. Take oatmeal off heat and add in the egg yolks, stirring constantly until well incorporated
    • If you don’t stir constantly the egg yolks will cook into a scrambled egg like texture which you want to avoid
  7. Serve immediately and enjoy

How much protein is in oatmeal when you make it with milk?

If you make it whole cows milk, this recipe has about 18 grams of protein (including the egg yolks). It’s certainly not the highest protein meal, but it uses whole food ingredients and has bio-available nutrients. It’s better than no protein when you’re in a pinch.

Are the egg yolks cooked in protein oatmeal?

The residual heat cooks the egg yolk so you don’t have to worry. Make sure you are stirring constantly so it incorporates well and you don’t have chunks of scrambled eggs in your oatmeal.

Can you eat this oatmeal the next day?

You definitely can. Just let it cool and store it in a glass container. You can heat it up in the microwave for about 1 minute (or until hot), or you can heat it up on the stove-top. You may need to add a splash of milk, depending on what consistency you prefer your oatmeal.
